Kevin Frayer (@kevinfrayer) is an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in the world’s leading news publications. He is a multiple winner at World Press Photo and the recipient of the 2015 Chris Hondros Fund Award. Previously based in the Middle East and South Asia, he currently lives in Beijing.
Kevin is taking over @GettyImages today with his coverage from The Corban Festival. Although Islam is a 'recognized' religion in the constitution of officially atheist China, ethnic Uyghurs are subjected to restrictions on religious and cultural practices that are imposed by China's Communist Party. Ethnic tensions have fueled violence that Chinese authorities point to as justification for the restrictions.
“I saw this woman throughout the protest. She was very vocal and was walking back and forth yelling at the line of officers. She final had enough and sat down, throwing her fist into the air. If you look to her right you can see a tear gas canister. The light was perfect and it’s a very visual scene. It was a quiet moment in the middle of chaos.” - Brian Blanco
